Dispersed camping is allowed in many areas of the Tahoe National Forest, including this one, approximately one mile up Conservation Road off Highway 20 outside of Nevada City, Calif. There are numerous pullouts with camping potential, but we went for this fairly large flat corner area and made it our mountain bike basecamp for two nights. With the Pfeiffer Trail literally running through the site, it made for great bike-in/bike-out access to Pioneer Trail, then the area gems Hoot Trail on the north side of Highway 20, and Scott's Flat Trail on the south side of the road. Faint, spotty internet service, no toilets or water, but all-in-all a great boondocking location. A few miles towards town on Highway 20 is the Harmony Ridge Market which has great sandwiches, coffee and good camp eats.
