This place (though not free) is truly a hidden gem! Not much in the way of shade in the camping areas, but a wonderful private section of river with wading pools, a swing, and nice/helpful staff.
DO NOT FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS! If it’s taking you down Verde Valley School Road, TURN AROUND. It’s a private way so you can’t get in. Says so on the website too but we didn’t check until we made it to the private gate and got stuck without reception. You have to keep driving north on 179, left/West on 89A, then down on Red Rock Loop Road to get there. The loop is a beautiful drive. Great campsite! Hot showers, clean bathrooms, yoga class at 9AM, and you can walk down to the creek to cool down. We dipped our feet & it was so nice :) There’s a sign on the way in with a phone number to text if you didn’t make a reservation, you find a spot if they don’t reply soon. It’s first come first serve base or reservation it seems? We just got there with no reservation. They’re donation based but their website won’t let you change from $50. You can talk to them. Nice picnic tables, even grounds for tents.
