Drive was super intimidating!!! Highly recommend high clearance. About 45 minutes drive from copper harbor, but so worth the drive.
Incredible location! Road was sketchy indeed but we made it fine in our 2wd van that I would say has "moderate" clearance. Little puddle ford (maybe 3inches deep) but otherwise it was bone dry and I think that was instrumental in our success. It is worth noting that once you're on the dirt road there are a handful of camp spots along the way before you get to the point, so you will likely have bail out options if you need them 😅 The point itself is a common hangout spot for locals etc and will have a decent amount of traffic coming and going, but the sites to sleep at are many and feel private enough that it's not like folks are crawling all over you. Major plus was the pit toilets here; seemed recently renovated and were very clean. Bear box style trash cans here too we're helpful. The swimming here is DIVINE and there's a trailhead for hiking right here too. Overall this spot was a dream and we would've stayed weeks if we could have. (Edit: learning after the fact that copper has de-stressing effects on the nervous system, if you believe that stuff. Since we were positively surrounded by the stuff in the ground and on the beach, it makes sense why we had such a lovely time here!!)
Many campsites and 2 pit toilets! I did it with 2wd. It's slow going especially for the last 3 of the 7.7 miles with around 6 rocky bottom water crossings. I think any truck or full size van will have no trouble but it takes around an hour to make the trek.
