We arrived on 9/26/22. It was my understanding this was the beginning of "off-season" and the 25th was the last in-season day. We called ahead and were told all sites were first come, first serve this time of year. Upon arrival, all the formal campgrounds were closed with gates (Lamoille, Thomas Canyon, etc.). There was a road off the main road, which lead to Lamoille campground. Though the actual entrance was closed, there were 5-7 (if cars shared space) pull off campsites prior to the gate. We and many others used these. We were in the campground by 6pm every night, and 2-4 cars/campers would drive through later, usually to not get a spot. We could not find anywhere to pay, nor information, so we did not pay during this stay. Campground costs money during the regular season. The canyon is beautiful and close to Elko, yet remote. We stayed two nights and loved the stars, sunsets and greenery. Campsites looked very nice and spaced out enough to be private. Roads do have a lot of potholes, a few of the campsites before Lamoille campground require 4x4/high clearance for access due to rocks. When campgrounds are open, looked like there were lots of sites + water/bathrooms.
